Evansville, IN – The Evansville Fire Department recently conducted hands-on training for its recruit class using the State Fire Training Academy SCBA Confidence Trailer at the Evansville Regional Airport.
The training exercise focused on strengthening essential firefighter skills in controlled but challenging environments.
The SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) Confidence Trailer is designed to simulate low-visibility and confined space conditions, requiring recruits to operate without clear sight and rely on their training and equipment.
Officials said the goal of the exercise was to build comfort and confidence in realistic conditions where visibility is limited or completely eliminated.
Recruits worked through multiple training rounds that progressively increased in difficulty, including blacked-out runs with added smoke conditions.
Throughout the training, participants focused on key operational skills such as air management, navigation, communication, and crew coordination under stress. Instructors emphasized decision-making and maintaining orientation while working in increasingly complex scenarios.
The department noted that the step-by-step approach allowed recruits to gradually adjust to higher levels of difficulty, reinforcing fundamental firefighting techniques while building confidence for real-world emergency response situations.
