Evansville, IN – Evansville Police arrested a 20-year-old man after officers found a firearm equipped with a machine gun conversion device during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
Officers stopped a vehicle around 1:40 a.m. near Chandler Avenue and Kerth Avenue after observing an equipment violation. The juvenile driver told officers he did not have a driver’s license.
While officers were identifying the passengers and preparing to have the vehicle towed, they spoke with passenger Jaylin J. Woods, 20, who agreed to a search. Officers found a small amount of marijuana and a 9mm bullet on Woods.
During an inventory of the vehicle before it was towed, officers found a firearm in the trunk equipped with a machine gun conversion device. Police said the device can allow a semi-automatic firearm to fire continuously with one pull of the trigger.
A witness also told officers they had seen Woods with a firearm earlier that day and noticed something attached to the back of it.
Based on the evidence and statements gathered during the investigation, Woods was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center.
Woods was charged with possession of a machine gun and possession of marijuana.
The juvenile driver was taken into custody on a separate charge and transported to the Youth Care Center.
