Evansville, IN – Evansville Fire Department crews from all three shifts received a behind-the-scenes look at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden this week as part of an effort to become more familiar with the facility in case of an emergency.
The crews toured the zoo and learned about the layout of the property, animal exhibits, access points and other details that could be important for firefighters responding to an emergency at the facility.
The Evansville Fire Department said the visits help crews become familiar with the zoo before an emergency occurs, allowing them to better understand how to navigate the property and reach different areas if a response is needed.
Firefighters from all three shifts participated in the behind-the-scenes tours, giving members of the department an opportunity to learn more about the zoo while also spending time with its staff.
The department said knowing the location of exhibits, access points and other features can be particularly useful during an emergency response, when crews may need to move quickly through an unfamiliar area.
The visit also included some time for fun, with firefighters stopping at the Penguins of Patagonia exhibit while they were at the zoo.
The Evansville Fire Department thanked Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden for welcoming its crews and providing the opportunity to learn more about the facility.
The department said the tours are part of its continued efforts to prepare firefighters for emergency situations throughout the community.
