Evansville, IN – Evansville Fire Department crews are being recognized for the care and reassurance they provided to a family after responding to an emergency involving a 2-month-old baby who had stopped breathing.
Earlier this month, firefighters and emergency medical personnel, including Engine 4, C-Shift and EFD EMS, responded to the call. The baby was breathing by the time crews arrived, and personnel provided care while also supporting his frightened parents during the difficult situation.
The department recently shared the family’s experience on social media, explaining that emergency responders often handle calls without the community ever hearing what happens afterward. However, the baby’s mother reached out to express her gratitude for the way the crew treated her family that night.
In her message, she highlighted how the firefighters offered immediate reassurance and emotional support while caring for her son.
“They didn’t have to support us the way they did, with the immediate praise and reassurance, but it truly helped us more than anything that night,” the mother wrote. “They will always be a part of his story.”
The family is still searching for answers about what happened to their baby, but the fire department said the child is doing okay, considering the circumstances.
The experience also prompted the parents to find a way to thank the first responders who helped them through one of the most frightening moments of their lives. They wanted to bring snacks and a thank-you card to the crew at Station 4 as a gesture of appreciation.
The Evansville Fire Department said the family’s message and thoughtful gesture serve as a reminder of the lasting impact emergency responders can have on people during difficult moments.
While firefighters and emergency medical personnel routinely respond to medical emergencies, their role can extend beyond providing immediate medical care. Reassuring family members and helping them remain calm during a crisis can also make a meaningful difference.
The department concluded its message by expressing support for the baby and his family as they continue through the difficult experience.
The family’s account offered a glimpse into the personal side of emergency response, highlighting how compassion and reassurance can remain with people long after the emergency crews have left.
