Evansville, IN — A local homeowner received an unsettling surprise when returning to their residence Friday afternoon to find not a burglar attempting to steal valuables, but rather an intruder fast asleep inside.
According to the Evansville Police Department (EPD), officers were dispatched to a burglary report on Temple Avenue after the homeowner arrived to discover broken glass on the ground and an unknown person resting in one of the rooms of the house. The homeowner immediately called police, who arrived to investigate the scene.
Upon entering the home, officers found 35-year-old Corey Gipson, who appeared to be sound asleep. When awakened, Gipson reportedly told police he did not know the homeowner and had broken into the house simply because he was “tired.”
In addition to his unexpected nap, officers found a vape pen in Gipson’s pocket that tested positive for THC, the active compound in marijuana. Gipson was taken into custody without further incident.
Gipson was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges related to burglary and possession of a controlled substance. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspect will face additional charges related to drug use or other crimes.
The incident has left the community in disbelief, with many wondering how someone could mistake breaking into a home for a place to rest. The Evansville Police Department reminds residents to secure their homes and contact authorities if they suspect any unusual activity in their neighborhoods.
As of now, Gipson remains in jail awaiting his next court appearance.
