Indianapolis, Indiana – The Colts lost their previous game at Dallas after giving up 33 points in the fourth quarter. This time, the Colts were the ones to hoist a 33.
It still wasn’t enough to win, though. On Saturday afternoon in Minnesota, the Vikings overcame a 33-point halftime deficit to defeat the Colts 39-36 in overtime, completing the biggest comeback victory in NFL history.
With a little more than two minutes left in the game, the Vikings scored five touchdowns in the second half to tie the score at 36. For the win in overtime, Greg Joseph made a field goal kick of 40 yards.
The Colts played their best half of the season in the first half, regardless of how horrible the second half was. They got off to a quick start, scoring on their first possession thanks to a 23-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin.
The Vikings’ first possession was stopped by the Colts, who then punted after Ifeadi Odenigbo blocked a Ryan Wright kick. With a 24-yard touchdown return of the block by JoJo Domann, the score read 10-0.
Minnesota sought a prompt response. After breaking a 40-yard run to get to the Indianapolis 35-yard line, Dalvin Cook fumbled, and Isaiah Rodgers recovered it. The Colts converted the turnover into a one-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Deon Jackson.
After that, the Vikings were stopped on two consecutive fourth-and-ones. Early in the second quarter, the Colts used the short fields to score two McLaughlin field goals and take a 23-0 lead.
The Colts weren’t through either. Kirk Cousins’ inaccurate pass was intercepted by Julian Blackmon, who returned it 17 yards for a touchdown. To make it 33-0, McLaughlin added a 27-yard field goal.
After collecting a 13-yard pass, Jonathan Taylor departed the game due to a right ankle injury. Due to an ankle injury, the defending NFL running champion missed three games early in the season.
The Colts are currently 4-9-1 and will get a few extra days of recuperation before playing home to the Chargers on Monday Night Football the day after Christmas.
