EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A touching homecoming took place Tuesday evening as dozens of community members gathered to celebrate the return of Evansville Police Officer Jordan Rundle, who has been recovering for over a month following a serious car accident. The procession, organized by the Evansville Police Department and FOP Lodge 73, saw Rundle escorted through the city in a display of support as he made his way back to his family and home after a long and uncertain recovery.
The accident, which occurred on December 10, left Officer Rundle with critical injuries, including a collapsed lung and severe trauma. His wife, Melanie, was also injured in the crash but was released from the hospital shortly after to stay by her husband’s side as he battled for his life. During the early days following the accident, the Rundle family remained uncertain about his survival.
“We were all there, sitting by his bedside, wondering if he was going to make it, hour by hour,” said Rundle’s father, Matthew Rundle, reflecting on the intense days after the crash.
Rundle’s condition required specialized care, and he was transferred to a Nashville hospital where he was placed on a life-saving device to assist with his heart and lung functions. For weeks, his condition fluctuated as doctors closely monitored his progress. However, on Tuesday, doctors confirmed that Rundle’s strength had improved enough for him to return home to Evansville.
“Earlier this morning, we thought it might be later in the week,” said Michelle Rundle, his stepmother. “But Jordan said if they didn’t let him out by the end of the week, he was going to walk home. We got three days and seven hours.”
Rundle’s return was celebrated with a heartfelt procession that traveled down the Lloyd Expressway, where crowds of supporters lined the streets, waving and cheering. The procession culminated at First Southern Baptist Church on South Cullen Avenue, where Rundle made a brief stop to thank those who had been waiting for him.
“It’s amazing how the police department stayed by our side every step of the way, from Nashville to here,” said Matthew Rundle. “The family of the police department was incredible.”
Support from the Evansville community has played a significant role in Rundle’s recovery. A GoFundMe campaign created to help cover medical expenses raised more than $17,000, and local businesses, including Prime Time Pub and Grill in Newburgh, organized fundraising events to support the family.
“We’re so excited. We’re so happy,” said Matthew Rundle. “I’m a teacher, and my students probably didn’t understand what was going on with me today. I was just so overjoyed. We’re beyond thankful.”
Despite the emotional and physical challenges ahead, Officer Rundle’s recovery continues to inspire those around him. The Rundle family is planning to host a thank-you party to express their gratitude to the community for its unwavering support during this difficult time.
Though the journey to full recovery is far from over, Rundle’s return home marks a significant milestone in his healing process, serving as a testament to both his strength and the powerful support of the Evansville community.
