Bloomington, Indiana – A Bloomington man who damaged the Washington Monument earlier in 2022 was sentenced to pay more than $3,000 and serve a year of probation.
On a charge of destroying federal property, 44-year-old Shaun Deaton received his sentence on Tuesday in federal court.
According to court records, Deaton visited Washington, DC on September 20, 2022, and used red paint to scrawl an offensive phrase on the Washington Monument’s base.
When he was taken into custody, according to investigators, he still had the paintbrush in his hand and red paint on his body and clothes.
The National Park Service received $3034.99 in damages from Deaton for damaging the monument.
