Evansville, IN – The Evansville Fire Department is expanding the capabilities of its Fire Investigation Bureau by having members obtain dual authority as both firefighters and sworn law enforcement officers.
The department said members of the Fire Investigation Bureau will attend the police academy and receive the same dual-authority credentials already held by some personnel. The move is designed to strengthen the department’s ability to investigate fire incidents, identify causes and origins, and pursue criminal enforcement when necessary.
According to EFD, the expanded training will allow investigators to work more effectively alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement partners during complex fire investigations.
The department said the initiative builds on its existing model of using dual-authority personnel who combine firefighting experience with law enforcement responsibilities.
Officials said the approach will enhance investigations by giving fire investigators additional tools and authority when determining whether a fire was accidental or involved criminal activity.
The Fire Investigation Bureau plays a key role in examining fire scenes, collecting evidence, and helping determine how and why fires occur.
The department also highlighted a recent swearing-in ceremony involving one of its newest members — Indie, the Evansville Fire Department’s Ignitable Liquid Detection K-9.
Indie, along with her handler Investigator Moore, was officially sworn in by the City of Evansville. The department said the K-9 quickly became the highlight of the ceremony.
EFD said Indie’s specialized abilities will support investigators by assisting with fire scene examinations and helping detect ignitable liquids during investigations.
The department said the continued development of the Fire Investigation Bureau reflects its commitment to improving fire investigations, increasing accountability when criminal activity is involved, and providing stronger service to the Evansville community.
