Evansville, IN – The Evansville Fire Department shared details this week about its highly trained trench rescue team, which is equipped to respond to some of the most dangerous and complex emergency situations.
According to the department, trench collapses can generate up to 10,000 pounds of force within seconds when a wall gives way. These incidents are often severe and, in many cases, shift from rescue efforts to recovery operations.
Despite the risks, crews emphasized that their primary objective remains saving lives whenever possible.
During training exercises held this week, firefighters focused on stabilizing trench walls under extreme pressure. The exercises were designed to prevent additional collapses while creating a secure environment where victims can be treated and safely removed.
Officials noted that trench rescues are both complex and time-intensive, typically taking between four and 10 hours to complete. Each operation requires careful coordination, precision, and advanced technical skills to ensure the safety of both victims and responders.
