Evansville Superintendent Dr. David Smith Delivers Final State of the Schools Address Ahead of Retirement

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) Superintendent Dr. David Smith delivered his final State of the Schools address on Tuesday, reflecting on his tenure and offering insight into the future of the district. This year’s address marked the end of his leadership ahead of his planned retirement on July 1, 2025.

Dr. Smith, who has served as superintendent for several years, covered a broad range of topics during the address, including the district’s financial status, daily operations, and the ongoing search for his successor. He began by highlighting the district’s commitment to excellence in education and the tremendous efforts of the teachers and staff who work tirelessly for the students.

“I am blessed to work with outstanding people who love kids, and spend every day in a noble and worthy effort to make lives better,” Dr. Smith said. His words underscored his deep respect for the educators and staff members who have contributed to EVSC’s success over the years.

However, Dr. Smith did not shy away from addressing some of the pressing challenges the district faces, especially when it comes to funding. “Funding continues to be a concern,” he noted. “You can’t be towards the bottom of the nation and still value teachers and employees like we need to.” His comments reflected ongoing struggles many districts face in securing adequate resources, which are essential for maintaining quality education and supporting teachers.

The address also provided a closer look at the scope of EVSC’s operations, highlighting the fact that it remains the third-largest school district in the state. Dr. Smith acknowledged the complexities involved in managing such a large district, but expressed confidence in the team and the systems that are in place.

After discussing the challenges, Dr. Smith took a moment to recognize the outstanding achievements of students and teachers within the district, presenting merit awards to those who have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields. These awards served as a reminder of the dedication and hard work that continue to drive the district forward.

In closing, Dr. Smith expressed his optimism for the future of the district, especially in the hands of his successor. “I believe the school corporation is in great hands,” he said. “We are leaving a strong foundation for the next superintendent to build upon.”

With his retirement date quickly approaching, the search for a new superintendent will soon be a focal point for the EVSC. Dr. Smith’s leadership has left an indelible mark on the district, and his final address was a fitting tribute to his years of service.

As Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation prepares for a new chapter, Dr. Smith’s legacy of dedication to both students and staff will undoubtedly continue to influence the district for years to come.
