EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A Petersburg man was arrested Sunday morning following a crash at the Huck’s Gas Station near Fort Branch. The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving a report of an accident with injuries at approximately 7:50 a.m.
According to law enforcement officials, the driver, later identified as James Johnson, struck the building at the gas station and was attempting to leave the area when authorities were alerted. Deputies arrived to find Johnson’s truck stuck in a ditch beside the station.
A witness at the scene informed deputies that Johnson was inside the gas station. Officers located him shortly after and noted visible cuts on his face, as well as blood on his hands. Emergency medical personnel evaluated Johnson, but it was clear that he had sustained some injuries.
While speaking with Johnson, deputies reported a strong odor of alcohol emanating from him, prompting them to initiate a roadside DUI investigation. Following the investigation, Johnson was arrested and transported to the Gibson County Jail.
Johnson faces multiple charges, including Operating While Intoxicated with a Prior Offense, Refusal of a Chemical Test, Criminal Mischief, Failure to Stop After an Accident, and Driving While Suspended.
The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
