Porter County, Indiana – An drunken motorist was detained by police on Friday night after he struck a semi, fled the scene, and was later discovered in a ditch on Interstate 94.
For a hazardous cleanup from a previous collision, troopers were maintaining the I-94 westbound lane restriction at the Burns Harbor exit around 6 o’clock. While doing so, the officers saw a semi and a Chevrolet collide in the opposing westbound lanes. According to a news release on Saturday, the Chevrolet fled the scene while traveling westbound and sustained significant front-end damage in the collision.
At the 20.5-mile marker on I-94, an Indiana State trooper was able to find Tiffany M. Bergstrom, 32, the driver of the Chevrolet, in a ditch. Although Bergstrom declined to submit to a breath test and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical clearance, the trooper still opened an O.W.I inquiry.
A Porter County Judge requested and approved a warrant for a blood test, which was then provided by the police. Bergstrom was escorted to the Porter County Jail after receiving the all-clear from her doctor.
Preliminary charges against Bergstrom include abandoning the scene of an accident, operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated endangerment (previous conviction), and operating while intoxicated.
