Evansville, IN — An Evansville man has been arrested after authorities say he neglected his elderly father, who was suffering from dementia. According to the Evansville Police Department (EPD), Toy Whittley, the father’s longtime caregiver, was taken into custody on charges of Neglect of a Dependent.
EPD officers responded to a call on the 600 block of Chateau Drive, where they found the elderly man, identified as Jackie Whittley, in distress. The call came after neighbors reported hearing the elderly man, who had dementia, calling out for help.
When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered Jackie Whittley lying in a bed, surrounded by soiled sheets. The sheets were heavily stained with large amounts of urine and feces, and there was additional fecal matter smeared on the walls next to the bed. Officers observed that Jackie appeared severely malnourished and extremely thin, which they attributed to a lack of proper care and nutrition.
Further examination revealed that Jackie was unable to stand or walk and was confined to the bed. He had multiple healing sores across his upper body, including a pressure ulcer on his lower back. Officers determined that his physical needs had not been properly addressed, prompting the arrest of Toy Whittley.
Toy Whittley, who had been his father’s caregiver for an extended period, is now facing charges related to neglecting a dependent adult. Authorities emphasized the severity of the situation, noting the distressing conditions in which Jackie Whittley had been living.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details regarding the case have not yet been released. Toy Whittley is currently being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
