EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An 18-year-old driver was hospitalized early Friday morning after crashing his truck into a home on E. Olmstead Rd. in Evansville. Authorities say the accident occurred shortly after 3 AM when Yonatan Perez Vazquez, the driver of the pickup truck, lost control while driving on N. Heidelbach Ave.
Evansville Police Department (EPD) officers arrived at the scene to find the vehicle had veered off the roadway and collided with the side of a home. The crash caused significant structural damage to the house, including damage to the walls that was so severe officers could see through the floor into the basement.
According to police, Vazquez admitted to arguing with his girlfriend over the phone when the crash occurred and claimed he was unable to avoid hitting the house. Officers found multiple empty alcoholic beverage cans on the floorboard of the truck, which led them to suspect the driver had been drinking.
Fortunately, the homeowner, who was inside the house at the time, and her dog were unharmed. However, the property sustained substantial damage.
Vazquez was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. He is facing charges related to driving under the influence and reckless driving.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as the potential consequences of distracted driving.
