Indianapolis, Indiana – Authorities report that a person was killed in a small plane crash Tuesday afternoon on train tracks on Indianapolis’ south side.
The incident occurred near Weaver and East Edwards avenues on Tuesday around 4 p.m. Indianapolis police, fire departments, and ambulances were rushed to the site. That is immediately south of the University of Indianapolis, southeast of the intersection of Shelby Street and East Hanna Avenue. About the collision, a local neighbor alerted the police.
At a press conference held at the scene of the accident, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Genae Cook stated that the identity of the deceased was not immediately known because family members were still being notified of the death.
Cook reported that all train service has been suspended until investigators are on the scene. Near the scene of the collision, one CSX train has already been stopped. It was anticipated that the investigation would keep the tracks closed all night.
“Federal partners” will be investigating the crash late Tuesday, Cook said. They will determine where the plane took off and where it was going, as well as what caused the crash.
Cook stated that anyone who may have witnessed or captured the plane crash was urged to speak with investigators.
IMPD said on social media, “There is no outstanding threat to the community or nearby neighborhood.”
