Indianapolis, Indiana – The Indianapolis Zoo now has one more member!
The Indianapolis Zoo announced on Facebook on Sunday that mother Koko had given birth to a white-handed gibbon.
“We don’t yet know the newborn’s gender, but this precious little primate is doing well and holding tight to mom Koko,” the zoo wrote.
Gibbons are a species of threatened ape found only in southern and southeast Asia. They can weigh between 9 and 15 pounds, range in length from 16 to 23 inches, and have white markings on their faces, hands, and feet. According to the zoo, gibbons are one of the few primates who can sing, and their duets can last up to 30 minutes.
The gibbon family in the Forest is open to visitors visiting the zoo.
