Bloomington, Indiana – Mask mandate may drop on June 7th, but this will probably apply only for those fully vaccinated according to latest information.
The health department will ask the City-County Council to end its mask mandate on their next meeting on June 7th for everyone, but they hope this to be applied at least for those fully vaccinated, Marion County Public Health Department Director Dr. Virginia A. Caine said on Wednesday.
Fully vaccinated are considered those with received two doses of the vaccine, two weeks after the second dose. For others, mask mandate will probably still apply.
According to the latest reports, a total of 40% have received the vaccine in Marion County, of which nearly 36% are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, officials are pushing people to get vaccinated as that means even more restrictions lifted as early as July.
The unofficial plan nationwide is 50% of the residents vaccinated by July 4th. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett says this means even more restrictions lifted and safer environment for everyone.
“The vaccines are a lifesaving resource that need to be as widely available as possible. Even now, our city continues to see deaths” from COVID-19, he said. “We are morally obligated to eliminate that all together.”
Marion County was seeing 170-180 cases daily in the beginning of May. Those numbers are now lowered to only 70-80 cases per day which is great. Officials say the numbers are dropping as a result of warm weather and people spending much more time outdoors, as well as more vaccinated people.
People who are not yet fully vaccinated will be expected to wear masks when in public and social distance, but Caine said that the health department does not have the capacity to police people’s actions.
