Evansville, IN – A 20-year-old man from Macon, Georgia, has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Jasper, Indiana hotel on December 19. Jakahri Curry is accused of killing 27-year-old Lawrence Walker of Cleveland, Ohio, after a confrontation that escalated into violence.
Curry appeared in court on Monday, where Dubois County Prosecutor formally filed the murder charge against him. He remains in custody at the Dubois County Jail without bond. A jury trial has been scheduled for April 22, 2025, while a status hearing will take place on February 18, 2025.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Curry and Walker were both part of a four-man crew working at a job site near Loogootee, Indiana. The affidavit states that Walker became involved in a heated argument with the crew’s boss. As a result, the boss instructed the crew to take Walker back to their hotel so he could collect his belongings and return to a bus.
After arriving at the hotel, Walker went to his room to gather his items, while Curry and the other crew members waited in the truck. When Walker returned, the affidavit details, a dispute over money owed between him and Curry led to a physical altercation. Curry told police that Walker punched him in the face, though no visible injury was noted.
In response to the altercation, Curry pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot Walker multiple times. Afterward, Curry walked back to the hotel while the other crew members took Walker to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Walker later died from his injuries. The coroner’s report confirmed that Walker had been shot six times, with one of the wounds being fatal.
Curry reportedly called his father after the shooting, informing him about the incident. Police later found a black Glock 9mm handgun on Curry’s bed in his hotel room, along with several shell casings in the parking lot where the shooting occurred. No other individuals were injured during the altercation.
The tragic shooting has left the Jasper community reeling as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Walker. Curry is expected to return to court for his status hearing in February, with a jury trial set for next year.
