Bloomington, Indiana — In order to further establish his Indiana heritage, John Mellencamp will give an archived collection of his life and work to Indiana University. During the Mellencamp Symposium on Friday, the school made the announcement.
The collection, according to the school, contains objects that are connected to his renowned artistic talent, social involvement, and generosity. Officials at the school claim that it is home to unique works of art, pictures, musical instruments, and other important artifacts.
“His collection will be an incredible resource for art scholars and a clear source of inspiration to our students,” says IU President Pamela Whitten. “We are thrilled to honor him and celebrate his many contributions to music, art, and IU.”
The archives will serve as the focus of Indiana University’s initiatives to encourage students to pursue rewarding careers in the arts and entertainment.
The institution will commission a sculpture to memorialize Mellencamp’s artistic legacy for its Bloomington campus, according to President Whitten’s other announcement.
On May 5 and 6, John Mellencamp will perform twice at Evansville’s Old National Events Plaza.
