Thursday’s update from the Indiana Department. of Health (IDOH) shows just 598 Hoosiers hospitalized with coronavirus on the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virus hospitalizations haven’t been this low since June 26, 2020, when Indiana hospitals reported 595 COVID-19 patients.
Hospitalizations in the Monroe County area are down as well; just 15 patients are hospitalized with the virus, the lowest reported number since the beginning of the pandemic.
March 11, 2020 marked the day that the World Health Organization officially declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic. Since then, 670,074 Hoosiers have been diagnosed with the virus and 12,382 are confirmed to have died from COVID-19.
A new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that about 1 in 5 Americans say they have lost a relative or close friend to the virus. As of Thursday, more than 527,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, with communities of color the hardest-hit.
IDOH reported 922 new cases and 32 more confirmed deaths Thursday, with a seven-day all-test positivity rate of 3.1%.
Monroe County reported 14 new cases and one new confirmed death, bringing the county’s totals to 10,487 cases and 165 confirmed deaths. The county’s positivity rate increased slightly to 0.5%.
And as of Thursday, 1,203,613 Hoosiers have received a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 771,091 are now fully vaccinated. In Monroe County, 24,166 people have received a first dose and 15,617 are fully vaccinated.
