Indianapolis, Indiana – Around the Fourth of July vacation, law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be on the lookout for drunk drivers.
Officers will increase patrols from June 30 through July 8 with the main objective of avoiding catastrophes similar to those that have occurred in the past around the Fourth of July holiday.
“Impaired driving is a serious problem that claims the lives of thousands of people each year in our state and nation. While increased enforcement efforts can help to reduce impaired driving, we cannot simply arrest our way out of this problem,” Executive Director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Devon McDonald said in a release.
“We need to work together to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and encourage people to make smart choices when they drink. If you are going to drink, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi. It is not worth risking your life or the lives of others.”
In Indiana, there were 949 road fatalities in 2022, and 110 of those deaths involved alcohol.
Driving while intoxicated in Indiana is prohibited at.08 or above. Additionally, drivers under 21 who have a BAC of.02 or higher face fines and a one-year license suspension.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s Sober Ride Indiana program is sponsoring a special holiday promotion in Indianapolis from June 29 through July 4 that offers $15 off Uber and Lyft rides with a limit of 500 redemptions per day in an effort to further reduce drunk driving.
