Evansville, Ind. – A piece of aviation history will soar into Evansville later this spring, as the historic Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Doc” makes a stop at the Evansville Wartime Museum. One of only two remaining airworthy B-29 bombers in the world, “Doc” holds a special place in both aviation history and the city’s own legacy of wartime aircraft production.
Built during World War II, the B-29 Superfortress was one of the most advanced bombers of its time. “Doc” is among the 1,644 B-29s that were manufactured in Wichita, Kansas, and is now one of the few still operational. The aircraft’s arrival in Evansville offers a rare chance for the public to step inside and experience the history of this iconic bomber.
“We’re thrilled to bring the B-29 Doc History Restored Tour to the Evansville Wartime Museum,” said Mark Novak, the chief pilot of B-29 Doc. “Evansville has a rich history of wartime aircraft production, and this stop is a perfect opportunity to honor the legacy of those who built and flew these incredible machines. We look forward to sharing the sights, sounds, and history of this legendary bomber with the community.”
The event will begin on Thursday, May 8, with “Doc” arriving at the Evansville Wartime Museum. Ground and cockpit tours will be available starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 9. For those looking for a more immersive experience, rides aboard the historic bomber will be offered on Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. both days. Following the rides, ground and cockpit tours will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
Visitors planning to attend will need to purchase a museum admission ticket, as well as an additional $5 per person for access to the B-29 “Doc” during the event. The tours and rides offer a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the aircraft’s history and craftsmanship, while also honoring the efforts of those who built these machines in Evansville.
The B-29 Superfortress “Doc” represents a vital piece of American history, and its visit to Evansville provides a rare chance to connect with the past in a city known for its significant contributions during World War II. Aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and members of the community are encouraged to attend and experience this remarkable aircraft.
