Bloomington, Indiana – At the Monroe County Courthouse on Saturday, June 3, at 4 p.m., the city of Bloomington will hold a memorial service to remember those who have lost their lives to gun violence. The event is a part of Wear Orange weekend, a campaign remembering individuals who have been affected by gun violence, according to a news release from the city of Bloomington.
According to the news release, the event aims to celebrate gun violence survivors in the Bloomington community and bring attention to gun violence.
The Wear Orange Weekend is scheduled for June 2–6. June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month and June 2 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, according to the Sandy Hook Promise. Every year, events are held by Wear Orange on National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the weekend after. According to Wear Orange, a lot of individuals will be wearing orange this weekend in remembrance of the victims and injured caused by gun violence.
On June 2, 2015, Hadiya Pendleton’s 18th birthday, family and friends of Pendleton, who was shot and died at age 15 on a Chicago playground in 2013, coordinated Wear Orange. Pendelton passed only a week after playing with her high school band at former president Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Friends and relatives gathered in the park where Pendelton was killed to commemorate her life and the lives of others affected by gun violence while wearing orange, the color that hunters wear for protection.
