EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A large sinkhole has prompted the closure of Riverside Drive, disrupting traffic in the area. The incident occurred at the intersection of westbound Riverside Drive and Chestnut Street, where a noticeable dip formed in the road.
City Engineering Officers responded to the situation, quickly shutting down both lanes of Riverside Drive. The closure extends to Cherry Street, as authorities work to assess the damage and ensure public safety.
Evansville Police confirmed that the street department has been notified and is preparing to address the issue by filling in the sinkhole. However, the road will remain blocked off overnight to allow the water and sewer departments to inspect the area first thing in the morning.
Officials have advised drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes until the road can be safely reopened. As of now, there is no estimated timeline for when the repairs will be completed.
