Evansville, IN — Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office officials have announced the arrest of Javeon Cox in connection with a June 2023 shooting, with investigators continuing to search for another suspect involved in the crime.
According to an affidavit, Evansville Police Department (EPD) officers responded to a report of shots fired on the 600 block of Adams Avenue on June 6, 2023. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim who had sustained multiple shotgun wounds to his torso. The victim was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he was unable to provide police with any information about the shooter or the motive behind the attack.
Surveillance footage from a nearby residence later revealed key evidence. The video showed an SUV pulling up to the address just as the victim exited his vehicle. Shots were fired from the driver’s side window of the vehicle, striking the victim. Investigators later determined that the weapon used in the shooting was a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device, commonly known as a “switch.”
The investigation took a significant turn when the victim’s sister contacted police with new information. She provided authorities with two social media accounts belonging to a man identified as Javeon Cox, who went by the name “Trustnone Lujay” online. On the accounts, Cox was seen holding an “AK”-style rifle, which used the same type of ammunition found at the shooting scene.
In the days following the shooting, investigators discovered that Jakhei Michell, another individual connected to Cox, had been attempting to sell or trade a Glock 21 handgun. Police later linked this handgun to the crime, as it fired the same caliber ammunition as the weapon used in the attack. Mitchell had communicated with a man named Valcharles Murry about selling or trading the firearm, which further expanded the scope of the investigation.
In late June 2023, a search warrant was executed at Cox’s apartment, where investigators discovered an AK-47 rifle. Test firing the weapon confirmed that it was the same rifle used in the shooting. Several machine gun conversion switches were also found at the apartment. Meanwhile, Murry reportedly fled from police during a separate investigation and was found in possession of a handgun, which was also linked to the shooting.
Cox was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of attempted murder. Authorities are still seeking an arrest warrant for Mitchell, who is facing similar charges in connection with the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement works to piece together the details surrounding the incident. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Evansville Police Department.
