EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Fire Department (EFD) marked a significant milestone today with the introduction of its newest fire engine. A ceremonial “push-in” event took place at the department’s station, a time-honored tradition that dates back to the era of horse-drawn fire apparatuses.
During the ceremony, firefighters manually pushed the new engine into the station, symbolizing its official entry into service. This ritual is a nod to the days when fire trucks were drawn by horses and needed to be physically pushed into the station after each call. The practice continues to be a meaningful way for fire crews to celebrate the arrival of new equipment.
The new engine, which will be deployed for emergency calls across the city, was designed with input from a special committee of EFD personnel. The committee worked together to ensure the truck met the needs of the department and reflected its commitment to providing the best possible service to the community.
This particular fire engine is also dedicated to the memory of Dan Kissel, a late firefighter with the Evansville Fire Department. Kissel’s legacy and contributions to the department are honored through this vehicle, serving as a tribute to his dedication and service to the community.
“We’re proud to welcome this new engine into our fleet, and it’s even more meaningful that it’s in honor of Dan,” said an EFD spokesperson. “His memory will continue to inspire our firefighters as they serve the people of Evansville.”
The new engine is expected to enhance the department’s ability to respond to emergencies and improve overall safety in the city. With the addition of this truck, EFD is better equipped to protect the citizens of Evansville and carry out its mission with the utmost professionalism.
