BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Police in Bloomington arrested a man accused of stabbing and killing his girlfriend.
The victim, identified as 50-year-old Heather Nanny-Cole, was reported missing over the weekend by her son who told police he hadn’t seen or spoken to his mom in 10 days.
“A 20-year-old man reported that his 50-year-old mother was missing and hadn’t heard from here since May 6th and was obviously concerned about her well-being and was unable to get in contact with her,” said Bloomington Police Captain Ryan Pedigo.
On Monday, a friend searching for Nanny-Cole spotted her car near her boyfriend’s apartment and alerted police after the boyfriend refused to allow her inside the apartment.
“He did eventually allow officers inside. Once inside officers noticed an object on floor covered with blanket that appeared to be size of human body. Lifting the blanket it was apparent it was a deceased female,” said Pedigo.
Police immediately handcuffed and arrested 59-year-old John Bryant.
Based on the decomposition of the victim’s body, police believe Nanny-Cole had been stabbed and left dead on the floor of the apartment for several days before being discovered, with the suspect making very little effort to conceal her death.
“It is certainly unusual,” said Pedigo.
As for a motive for Bloomington’s first murder of 2020, Captain Pedigo added police don’t know what led up to the deadly stabbing.
“That’ll be something that hopefully as the investigation continues we’ll be able to answer some of those questions for the family,” said Pedigo.
The suspect remains behind bars at the Monroe County Jail. He’s being held without bond.
