Bloomington, Indiana – We are all getting very excited during the Fourth of July with all those fireworks, parties and gathering with family and friends. But authorities urge everyone once again to be cautious with all those celebrations especially with fireworks.
However, they also added that people shouldn’t fire their guns into the air. Not just it’s illegal, but is very dangerous for the public’s safety as the thing that goes up, must come down.
Bloomington Police Department say they receive hundreds of calls for the New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July for people firing their guns into the air. Authorities say this is bad idea, for everyone.
“This dangerous and illegal action can cause serious or fatal injury and lead to possible arrest and prosecution,” authorities said.
Bullet fired in the air will ascend for more than a mile, but when going down, a smaller caliber bullet will reach a speed of 300 feet per second, while larger caliber bullet can reach 500 feet per second.
A bullet traveling at a rate of 150-170 feet per second can penetrate human skin, and a velocity of 200 feet per second can penetrate a person’s skull.
If someone gets arrested for using guns will face charges and sentence up to 2 and a half years.
If you see someone firing a weapon, just call 911.
