Indianapolis, Indiana – The Leighton School of Nursing is attempting to address Indiana’s shortage of nurses.
The Dean of the Leighton School of Nursing is Dr. Dorothy Gomez. By 2031, she claims, the state will need to hire an additional 5,000 nurses in order to keep up with demand.
According to Gomez, there are two key elements influencing demand. A growing number of nurses are retiring, and an older population will require more care.
Ascension St. Vincent and Marian University have teamed up to offer an expedited nursing curriculum.
The program enables those with prior college degrees to complete their nursing degree in 18 months. Ascension Healthcare is where all of the student clinics are completed.
Marian University and Ascension Health are working together for the “Come Explore Nursing” open house on Monday night. The event takes place at St. Vincent on 86th Street from 4 to 7 p.m. Prospective nurses will get the chance to learn more about Marian’s programs and nursing in general.
