Lawrence County, Indiana – Following a traffic stop, two officers were shot in Lawrence County. According to Indiana State Police, the incident took place on Sunday at about 3:15 a.m.
After conducting a traffic stop, a Mitchell gas station off State Road 37 was entered by the suspect’s car. According to ISP, a Mitchell police officer, a second Lawrence County deputy, and their K9 partner, all showed up to help. The K9 indicated there were drugs in the car after sniffing it.
After discovering drugs in the car during their search, officers sought to handcuff the male suspect, according to Indiana State Police.
According to ISP Sgt. John Perrine, the male suspect fled and crossed State Road 37. ISP stated that the suspect started to resist arrest when the police caught up to him. According to a Sunday morning update from Indiana State Police, the suspect pulled a gun during that attempt to make an arrest and started shooting at the cops.
Gunfire struck two cops. According to ISP, at least one of the cops retaliated by shooting at the subject.
The cops were transported to the hospital by ambulance before being flown to a facility in the Indianapolis region. Their injuries, according to Perrine, were severe but not life-threatening. After being transported to the hospital in an ambulance, the suspect was declared dead.
Police have retrieved a number of pieces of evidence from the scene, describing the investigation as difficult. The involved cops were donning body cameras.
