Carmel, Indiana – According to the city authorities, a member of the Carmel City Council who had been missing from public sessions due to a stroke passed away on Friday.
Bruce Kimball, 70, passed away on Friday afternoon, according to a news release from the city government.
Kimball’s son claimed to News 8 in May that the councilman experienced a stroke following his 2019 reelection. His salary and insurance coverage had been maintained.
The other eight council members debated a resolution in May to start the procedure for declaring Kimball’s seat empty because of his protracted absence. A 4-4 vote on that resolution resulted in its defeat.
Kimbelll’s son reacted to the vote in a statement: “I am sorely disappointed in the lack of support from fellow Carmel city council members, not just for this situation, but since my father had his stroke in December 2020.”
Kimball represents District 1, which is roughly bounded by 116th Street to the north, U.S. 31, and Keystone Parkway to the south. Since 2016, he had served the district. In 2023, he faced reelection to his position.
To choose Kimball’s successor, the Hamilton County Republican Party will hold a caucus on January 10.
