Indianapolis, Indiana – There is ongoing investigation about the shooting incident that took place Friday morning on northeast side of Indianapolis where one police officer was involved in the shooting.
According to police report, the incident happened around 3:30 a.m. to the 10000 block of John Marshall Drive for a welfare check.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a woman who immediately told officers that one man was trying to take her phone from her and choked her.
The suspect, who was still at the scene with gun is hand, opened fire to the responding officers. They returned and exchange of gunfire occurred.
Reportedly, none of the officers or the suspect were injured.
IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) did respond to the scene and is investigating the situation. IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit responded to the scene to conduct an administrative investigation as well.
Investigators found the gun used in the shooting and they will use it as an evidence. Surrounding cameras will be checked, officers’ body-cameras and some of the neighbors will be questioned during the investigation.
The officers involved in the shooting incident has been put on administrative leave until the incident is fully investigated. This is a practice evert time an officer fires his weapon.
“Nobody’s injured, which is always how I would like it. We’ll certainly review the officer’s actions to ensure they were lawful and in compliance with our department policies,” police department official said.
“It’s important that we be transparent and conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that we’re doing what the community expects of us in these types of situations.”
