Indianapolis, Indiana – Chemical spill involving nitric acid on northeast side of Indianapolis pushed heavy smoke in the air on Thursday morning.
According to Fire Department report, the chemical spill incident took place at Imagineering Finishing Technologies on Emerson Avenue and fire crews were sent at the scene around 9 a.m. Fire crews said that nitric acid was involved in the incident.
The nitric acid was inside of a container when it reacted with moisture, resulting in the spread of the chemical compound. Heavy orange clouds were seen in the area that even drivers alongside I-70 reported multiple times about the smoke.
A total of 29 workers were evacuated from Imagineering Finishing Technologies and Environmental Restoration.
People in the are were asked to close their doors and windows to prevent smoke entering their homes. The area impacted is north to 30th Street, south to I-70, Butler East to Emerson West, according to IFD.
Nitric acid is not that dangerous, but irritates the eyes and lungs.
No injuries were reported as of now.
