EVANSVILLE, Ind. – As snow continues to blanket the city, many of Evansville’s sidewalks remain covered, forcing pedestrians to navigate the streets in a dangerous situation. While the roads remain passable, the snowy sidewalks create significant hazards for both walkers and drivers.
According to the Evansville municipal code, property owners are responsible for clearing the sidewalks adjacent to their properties following a snowfall. This means homeowners and businesses are expected to remove snow within a reasonable timeframe to ensure pedestrian safety.
With sidewalks blocked by snow, pedestrians are left with no choice but to walk in the streets, increasing the risk of dangerous interactions with traffic. Evansville Police Department Sergeant Anthony Aussieker emphasized the importance of caution, urging pedestrians to limit walking on roadways and exercise extreme care when unavoidable.
“There are statutes that state if a sidewalk is available, pedestrians are required to use it. However, if it’s covered in snow, that becomes a limiting factor,” said Sergeant Aussieker. “If pedestrians can avoid walking on the road, they should do so for their own safety.”
City officials are reminding all Evansville residents to adhere to city ordinances regarding snow removal. In addition to encouraging property owners to clear their sidewalks, drivers are also urged to remain vigilant and reduce speeds in residential areas, where snow and ice may limit visibility.
As the snow continues to fall, authorities are hopeful that increased awareness and adherence to the city’s guidelines will help reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of everyone on the streets.
