Evansville, Ind. — A lawsuit filed in Vanderburgh Superior Court is challenging the eligibility of Tanisha Carothers, the Ward 4 Council Member for the City of Evansville. The complaint, filed by Angela Bullock and Shona Jarboe, accuses Carothers of failing to meet the statutory requirements for voter registration and residency when she ran for office. The plaintiffs claim that this makes her ineligible to serve on the City Council and are seeking her removal from office.
According to the lawsuit, Carothers’ appointment to the position was “unlawful” due to her failure to satisfy the necessary requirements under Indiana state law. The plaintiffs argue that the integrity of the election process and proper representation in government is at stake.
In a statement issued to 44News, Bullock and Jarboe outlined their concerns, emphasizing the importance of fair representation and transparency in local government. “We believe in fair and appropriate representation in government and responsible action by our elected and appointed officials,” the statement read. “We have discovered several issues that we find concerning and have determined that grassroots intervention is necessary. The appointment of a city councilor of questionable qualification should be of concern to all, regardless of party affiliation.”
They further expressed hope that their legal action would lead to greater oversight in Vanderburgh County. “We firmly believe that this action will open the door to greater oversight and transparency in Vanderburgh County,” the statement concluded.
Efforts to reach Carothers for comment on the lawsuit have so far been unsuccessful. As the case proceeds through the courts, the outcome could have significant implications for local elections and governance in Evansville.
