EVANSVILLE, Ind. — In a historic moment for the Evansville City Council, Council Member Ben Trockman was selected as the new council president during the body’s first meeting of the year on Monday night. Trockman, who represents the city’s first ward, becomes the first individual with a significant physical disability to hold the role.
Trockman, a returning council member, takes over the position with a message of perseverance and inclusivity. The vote was unanimous, with Trockman receiving widespread support from his colleagues. At-Large Council Member Paul Green was also selected as vice president of the council.
“It’s been a long journey to get to where I am today,” Trockman remarked following his election, reflecting on the challenges he has overcome since suffering a spinal cord injury as a high school student. The injury, which left him paralyzed from the neck down, occurred during a motocross race. His father performed CPR before Life Flight could arrive, and it was the beginning of Trockman’s path to becoming an advocate for those with disabilities.
Despite the significant physical challenges he faced after the injury, Trockman found strength in his voice. “When I first ran for city council in 2019, one of my biggest reasons was to show people that it can be done,” he said, speaking to the importance of representation for people with disabilities in public office.
Throughout his previous four years on the council, Trockman has worked tirelessly to advocate for individuals with disabilities on both local and national levels. His experience has shaped him into a resilient leader. “The challenges I faced as a young individual, especially right after my injury, made me into who I am today,” Trockman explained. “You learn patience, you learn perseverance, you learn, did I mention patience?”
Trockman continues to undergo physical therapy weekly with Easterseals Rehabilitation Center, a local organization that has been closely involved in his journey. Easterseals staff members have long admired his dedication and determination. “I think it just shows all of us, regardless of our abilities, that those dreams are reachable,” said Pam Kirk, Mission Communications and Impact Specialist for Easterseals.
As he assumes the role of City Council President, Trockman is focused on creating a collaborative and compassionate environment within the council. His goal is to foster teamwork and positive communication as he leads the city’s legislative body into the future.
In his first remarks as president, Trockman delivered a powerful message to the citizens of Evansville: “You can achieve anything no matter your ability.” His leadership serves as an inspiration to many, proving that determination and a commitment to service can overcome any obstacle.
