Evansville, IN — A local man was arrested Monday afternoon after being stopped by Vanderburgh County Deputies for reckless driving. The driver, identified as 51-year-old Ronald Hurt, was found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.320, more than four times the legal limit.
According to authorities, the incident began when a police officer observed Hurt in a gas station parking lot on Allen’s Lane. The officer reported that Hurt appeared to be struggling to exit the parking lot and then failed to yield while crossing Allen’s Lane, eventually entering another parking lot without giving right of way to oncoming traffic.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer noted signs of impairment. Hurt admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the day, explaining that he had drunk three or four beers, which he claimed were “five liter beers.” Despite his explanation, field sobriety tests were administered, which Hurt reportedly failed.
Further testing revealed that Hurt’s BAC was a staggering 0.320. This is far beyond the legal driving limit of 0.08 in Indiana and indicates a significant level of impairment. At this BAC, individuals typically experience severe motor and cognitive impairment, making it extremely dangerous to operate a vehicle.
Hurt was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation before being transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail. Authorities have charged him with driving under the influence, and he remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
The arrest serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, especially at levels as high as those recorded in this case. Law enforcement encourages all drivers to exercise caution and avoid driving if they have been drinking.
