Evansvile, IN – An Evansville man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted in connection to the death of his one-month-old child. Samuel Womack, 32, was found guilty of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death on October 18. The sentencing comes after a lengthy investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death earlier this year.
The tragic incident occurred on March 12, when Womack called 911, reporting that his baby was unresponsive and had blood coming from its mouth and nose. Paramedics rushed the infant to a local hospital, but despite their efforts, the baby was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Initially, Womack’s statements to authorities suggested a sudden and unexplained medical emergency. However, as detectives continued their investigation, they found multiple inconsistencies in Womack’s account of the events leading up to the baby’s death.
After a month of questioning and evidence gathering, Womack was arrested and charged with neglect. Prosecutors argued that Womack’s failure to provide adequate care for his infant led directly to the child’s death. On October 18, a jury found him guilty of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, a felony charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The case has drawn attention to issues of child neglect and the responsibility of caregivers in safeguarding vulnerable dependents. Womack will serve his sentence in an Indiana state prison.
