An additional sixth dose from Pfizer’s 5-dose vaccine vials is extracted by the IU Health pharmacy team that sets up the Covid-19 vaccine for its Monroe County clinic.
Brian Shockney, President of IU Health’s southwest region, told The Bloomington Star in an interview that they get at least six doses out of each vial. A specialized syringe is required for the extraction of the extra dose.
This is the same experience that many drug stores around the country have had.
But on Friday was announced that the sixth dose can no longer be considered a benefit. The above mentioned discovery will now result in less vaccines being delivered by Pfizer.
“Pfizer is planning to count the surprise sixth dose toward its previous commitment of 200 million doses of Covid vaccine by the end of July and will therefore supply the United States with fewer vials than expected,” according to the report.
The sixth dose extraction from a Pfizer vial will now be considered just par for the course.
