(BLOOMINGTON) – The City of Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) invites all school-age children in the area to participate in a fire safety video contest.
Participants are invited to produce a 30-second to three-minute video on any fire safety or fire prevention theme, for submission by June 1, for a chance at a variety of unique opportunities with the fire department.
Submissions may take the form of a public safety announcement, short dramatic film, comedy sketch, or other genres to communicate a fire safety message to peers or adults.
Submissions will be reviewed by BFD firefighters and judged within the following age categories: kindergarten-grade 3, grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12.
Submissions will be accepted from individuals or groups (observing CDC guidelines for physical distancing and/or mask-wearing in producing the film).
Winners will qualify for a number of opportunities available when the public health situation allows, including a ride in a fire engine to school or a pizza party with the BFD at your classroom (when in-class learning resumes) and a dinner prepared and served by firefighters at the firehouse. Additionally, winning videos will be posted on the BFD’s and Office of the Mayor’s social media sites.
Students may consult the National Fire Protection Association site for ideas about actions that prevent fires to explore in their videos, including installing home smoke alarms, closing bedroom doors when sleeping (Close Before You Doze), identifying two ways out of a room, conducting fire drills in the home, practicing Stop, Drop, and Roll, recognizing fire hazards in the home, cooking safely, operating fire extinguishers, and preventing wildfires.
Videos should be emailed by June 1 to Fire Prevention Officer Tom Figolah at figolaht@bloomington.in.gov, who can also provide additional suggestions for fire prevention topics and answer questions. More information is available on the BFD’s social media pages, including Instagram (@BloomingtonFireDept), Facebook, and Twitter (@BloomingtonFire).
