Indianapolis, Indiana – The police officer who was injured in the Sunday morning incident and transferred to hospital for treatment, was discharged the same police say.
According to police reports, the responding officer was dispatched in the 6500 block of Knobstone Way Sunday morning around 2 a.m. after they received a 911 call in regards to a person was suffering from mental and emotional issues.
While they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the responding officers used their mental health and de-escalation training taking down the person. At one point, totally unprovoked, the man lunged at the officer and grabbed the officer’s holstered gun.
“During the struggle for the gun, it discharged injuring the male suspect’s finger and the officer’s leg. The fired round did not penetrate the officer’s skin,” an email from IMPD Saturday afternoon read.
As a result of the injuries, the officer was taken to hospital for treatment together with the suspect and was released on Sunday.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency is assisting. IMPD informed the public that the body-cams were active when the incident happened and the footage will be taken into consideration as a proof.
Since a weapon was discharged resulting with injuries, the police officer will be on administrative leave until the separate investigation conducted by the Internal Affairs is finished.
The victim is still in hospital receiving treatment and no charges have been pressed as of now.
The statistics say this has been the third IMPD officer injured since the start of the year.
