Chandler, Ind. — The individual who was shot by law enforcement while attempting to steal a police vehicle in Warrick County on Monday was out on bond in connection with a 2024 attempted murder case, authorities confirmed.
The suspect, 31-year-old Nina Devillez of Santa Claus, Indiana, led officers on a pursuit that began in Warrick County, Indiana, and ended in Daviess County, Kentucky, after she crashed a stolen police cruiser in a field. According to law enforcement officials, Devillez was shot by an officer in Chandler before allegedly attempting to steal the law enforcement vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that Devillez was the same person arrested in November 2024 and charged with attempted murder in Lawrence County, Indiana, after a man was shot multiple times. Court records show Devillez was released on a $20,000 cash bond less than two weeks after her arrest in the attempted murder case.
The events on Monday escalated when authorities in Kentucky confirmed that Devillez faces several charges, including fleeing police, criminal trespass, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. She is expected to be extradited to Indiana to face additional charges related to the crimes committed during the pursuit.
Devillez is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital after the officer-involved shooting and the subsequent police chase.
As the investigation continues, questions are being raised about the circumstances surrounding Devillez’s release on bond and whether her prior charges should have impacted her ability to be free while awaiting trial. Authorities in both Indiana and Kentucky are working together to address the charges in both states.
This case highlights concerns over criminal justice processes, particularly in cases involving individuals with violent criminal histories, and it remains to be seen how Devillez’s legal situation will unfold in the coming months.
