EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A suspect drowned early Saturday morning after fleeing police and entering the water near Marina Pointe.
According to authorities, officers were responding to a report of a stolen vehicle when the suspect returned to the scene in the early hours of May 24. As officers approached, the individual ran toward a nearby tree line and fell into the water.
The suspect struggled to swim before submerging. An Evansville Police Department officer attempted to perform a rescue but was hampered by poor lighting and challenging water conditions.
The Evansville Fire Department conducted an extensive water rescue operation and located the suspect after several hours of searching. Authorities confirmed the suspect was deceased.
The investigation into the death is being handled by Henderson, Kentucky authorities. The identity of the suspect has not been released at this time.
