NEWBURGH, Ind. – A small fire broke out at First Christian Church in Newburgh Sunday morning, prompting the evacuation of around 150 people just before the start of the 10:30 a.m. service.
The fire, which officials say was caused by a small electrical issue, began around 10:15 a.m. at the church located at Old State Route 261 and Outer Lincoln Avenue. Smoke was visible, but fire crews quickly determined there was no major threat. Fortunately, the building sustained no significant damage.
Given the large number of people expected for the service, officials called in crews from multiple local departments to ensure the safety of all attendees. As the church aired out, the service was held outside in the parking lot, allowing the congregation to continue their worship.
Emergency crews remained on-site to assist, and the church leadership confirmed that the building would be safe for future use. No injuries were reported, and the situation was quickly brought under control.
