MOUNT VERNON, Ind. – The quick thinking and prompt response of a Mount Vernon police officer helped save the life of a woman in distress on Sunday.
Officer Zachary Adkins was dispatched to a residence on 10th Street after reports of an unconscious individual. Upon arrival, Adkins immediately began administering CPR to the woman, who was unresponsive at the time. Recognizing the severity of the situation, he quickly directed the woman’s husband to assist by setting up the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) nearby.
After the first shock was delivered by the AED, Officer Adkins continued performing CPR. His efforts were crucial as a second shock was administered, and CPR was maintained until emergency medical services (EMS) and the fire department arrived to take over care.
First responders have stated that without Officer Adkins’ rapid response, the woman may not have survived the medical emergency. His actions are being hailed as a key factor in saving her life.
In March, the Posey County Health Department provided the Mount Vernon Police Department with new AED pads, ensuring that officers could carry the life-saving devices in their vehicles. This investment proved vital in the critical moments that followed the woman’s collapse.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and quick action in emergencies. Thanks to Officer Adkins and the first responders, the woman is now receiving the care she needs, and her life was spared due to the heroic efforts of those who responded swiftly and effectively.
