EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Authorities in Vanderburgh County responded to a minor plane crash at Skylane Airport on Saturday following a report of a landing gear failure.
Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call about an aircraft experiencing issues with its landing gear. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the pilot, who explained that the nose gear of the plane had collapsed during the landing, causing the aircraft to pitch forward on the runway.
Fortunately, both the pilot and his passenger were secured in five-point harnesses at the time of the incident, preventing any injuries. The two occupants did not require medical attention and were able to walk away from the incident unscathed.
The crash site posed some challenges for authorities due to flooding in the surrounding area. Deputies were unable to access the airport directly and instead entered through adjacent neighborhoods to reach the scene.
In line with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines, the incident was self-reported by the pilot, as no injuries were sustained. The FAA has confirmed that no further federal investigation will be conducted as a result of the minor nature of the crash.
This marks the second incident of this type in recent months in the region, but authorities emphasized the safety measures in place, including the use of harnesses, that helped prevent a more severe outcome.
The cause of the landing gear failure remains under review, but officials noted that it appears to have been an isolated event.
