EVANSVILLE, Ind. — As snow is expected to blanket the area on Tuesday, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews are working diligently to ensure that local roads are ready for the weather conditions.
Gary Brian, the Southwest Public Relations Director for INDOT, explained that the department has already completed much of its pre-treatment work ahead of the anticipated snowfall. “We use a variety of methods to keep snow from sticking to the roads,” Brian said. “When you put salt on the ground while snow is falling, it helps melt the snow. The pre-treatment ensures that when the snow does accumulate on the roadway, it continues to melt instead of sticking.”
After a particularly icy January, Brian emphasized that INDOT is well-prepared for the upcoming storm. “Fortunately, we have a good sense of when these systems are approaching,” he said. “Typically, we know what to expect 48 hours ahead of time, so we are ready to act when the snow arrives.”
Despite the thorough preparation, INDOT officials are advising motorists to exercise caution once the snow begins to fall. They stressed that bridges and overpasses should be treated with extra care, as these areas tend to freeze faster than other parts of the road.
Additionally, officials are asking drivers to be aware of INDOT plows working to clear the streets as the storm progresses. With the snow and ice removal efforts in place, safety remains the top priority for both crews and drivers.
As the storm approaches, drivers are reminded that while the roads will be treated, patience and caution will be key in navigating the winter conditions.
