EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A 49-year-old Indianapolis man, wanted on drug charges, was taken into custody Tuesday morning after attempting to evade arrest in Evansville.
Vanderburgh County deputies were on the lookout for Charles Cleary, who was wanted for dealing methamphetamine. Authorities located Cleary driving near the intersection of Sherman and Columbia Streets just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday. When deputies attempted to apprehend him, Cleary turned onto a dead-end alley.
As deputies approached the alley to block his escape, Cleary allegedly backed up his vehicle, striking trash cans in the process. In an effort to prevent his flight, a deputy used their own vehicle to pin Cleary in the alley.
Despite being surrounded, Cleary reportedly refused to exit his vehicle for several minutes. After a brief standoff, deputies were able to take him into custody without further incident.
Upon arrest, authorities discovered methamphetamine in Cleary’s pocket. He was subsequently charged with drug possession and resisting law enforcement.
Cleary is currently being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail.
