VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 69 near the 11.5-mile marker. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) has released more details about the incident, which left one individual dead.
According to the sheriff’s office, a caller reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and plunged into Pigeon Creek. VCSO deputies, along with personnel from the McCutchanville Volunteer Fire Department and the Evansville Fire Department Water Rescue Team, responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered the vehicle submerged under the Pigeon Creek bridge. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was later removed from the car and confirmed deceased.
Investigators say a witness observed the vehicle traveling southbound on I-69 when, for reasons still unclear, it veered off the road. The car traveled more than 400 feet across the median, went airborne, and eventually landed in Pigeon Creek, approximately 27 feet below the road’s surface.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday afternoon to determine the cause of death, and the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash. Further details will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
